A sign in the window of a Dingle pub. ‘Ceol’ is the Irish for song or music. There is, however, a lively etymological debate about ‘craic’. It is conventionally taken to mean fun and/or bonhomie (often fuelled by alcohol). But some authorities hold that it derives from ‘ag buaileadh craiceann’ or ‘beating skin’ — a reference to “a highly private inter-personal (and usually inter-gender) activity which tends to promote mutual enjoyment, and sometimes progeny”. Er, I couldn’t possibly comment.

Feeding time
Explains why I don’t like goldfish. They remind me of venture capitalists.
Still life with PhotoShop
What’s in a name?
My kids, with remorseless logic, have pointed out the critical flaw. After all, they reason, Toys ‘R Us sell toys, so this store obviously sells babies.
Reflections
Photographed on Dingle Quay on Sunday.
San Diego sunset
As you can see from this nice photograph, poor Quentin is slumming it in San Diego. (He’s speaking at the FiRE conference.) It’s tough work, but someone’s got to do it.
Windbreak
These trees just outside Dingle have always fascinated me. They’ve withstood Atlantic gales for as long as I can remember. I’ve always wanted to photograph them but never got round to it — until yesterday.
Rock pool

Costa Rich
Note huddled masses in the bus queue.
Oh no! — not MORE PhotoShop options
Yep. PhotoShop CS2 is out, with even more features than the CS version I use. I’ve worked out that if I learn how to use one CS feature a day, (there are apparently 494 separate menu commands) I will have mastered the program by the end of 2006. And now the goalposts have moved.
(Thinks… Ostrich posture best strategy: don’t upgrade. Pretend CS2 never happened and hope Quentin doesn’t notice.) David Pogue of the New York Times claims that there are “at least 95 Photoshop how-to books, 3 Photoshop magazines and 4 annual Photoshop conferences”. I’m not surprised.
